About
Dr. Ilana Barakat, PhD
Welcome. I’m looking forward to connecting with you.
I have over 10 years of experience practicing psychotherapy. I am a Licensed Psychologist (License No. PSY27469.)
For the last 4 years, I have provided individual and group therapy in Oakland as the Assistant Director of Mills College Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS.) In this capacity, I have worked closely with clients aged 17-65, with an emphasis on work with socially-conscious individuals, LGBTQIA and TGNC communities, people of color, first generation to college, and individuals with strong social justice values. I also have supervised 3-4 doctoral trainees each year and co-taught the course “Psychodynamic Concepts and Sociocultural Considerations” in the CAPS social justice training program.
I received my PhD at Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY, and completed my internship at Bellevue Hospital, with a focus on young adults, asylum seekers, and trauma recovery and adult populations. I began studying psychology during my undergraduate degree at Cornell University, where my work began with survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. I completed my masters degree in Gender Politics at New York University and my PhD at Long Island University, where I specialized in cross-cultural studies, self-injury, emotion regulation, and young adult and adult populations.
I have practiced as a clinical psychologist in the state of California since 2014.
